Prospettive per un meccanismo di regolazione dei cambiamenti globali su basi fisiche".

Gli acciacchi della sua tarda eta' (compirà 90 anni nel gennaio prossimo) glielo hanno impedito: al suo posto ha parlato il suo allievo Lowell Wood, che è il secondo firmatario del progetto. Secondo Teller e Wood i tempi sono maturi per sperimentare una serie di "scatterers", ossia di dispositivi per la diffusione della radiazione solare, che possono essere impiegati per modulare, a piacimento, le temperature medie globali. "Da più parti viene suggerito che, per prevenire il surriscaldamento globale, dovuto alle emissioni di gas serra nell'atmosfera da parte dell'uomo, si debba ricorrere a riduzioni dei consumi Energy agreed on an international basis. Assicurano Teller e Wood, che nel caso della collocazione stratosferica, sarebbe possibile variare la quantità degli scatterers anche in funzione della latitudine, in modo da creare una serie di bande parallele all'equatore per arrivare così ad una "regolazione fine" della radiazione solare, a seconda delle esigenze. Quanto alla massa totale del materiale necessario per ottenere gli effetti desiderati, essa varia dai milioni di tonnellate (caso degli scatterers meno efficienti) alle migliaia di tonnellate (scatterers più efficienti). Ciò che ha più colpito la platea di Erice non è tanto l'eccesso di innovazione e di stravaganza del progetto (gli scienziati statunitensi ci hanno abituato a fascinose fughe in avanti), quanto la totale mancanza di sensibilità ambientale che lo contraddistingue. Risolvere l'effetto serra nei termini proposti da Teller significa rimuovere del tutto la questione degli sprechi e dell'inefficienza energetica, a danno totale del pianeta che si afferma di voler salvare.
